From the Lunch Counter to the Church Pew: Sixty Years of the American Protest

An African American girl prays to God.

Each Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who have given the last full measure “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Our God-given unalienable rights laid out in our founding documents have been taken for granted more and more with each passing generation. Most appreciate very little those things for which they didn’t have to work.

This Memorial Day is very different as millions of Americans are forced to defend their rights on our own soil by defying totalitarian leaders, taking to the streets, the beaches, the oceans, the parks and even their own backyards and churches to wrest back their unalienable rights from power-hungry elected officials who have chosen to ignore our founding documents. As New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy stated on national television, “I wasn’t thinking about the Bill of Rights when we did this.”

At first, neither were the American People. We were told by the “experts” that we must shut everything down or “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!” Americans were more than willing to, as Ben Franklin said, “give up essential liberties for temporary security” and to go along with the initial 15-day lockdown in order to “flatten the curve.” We achieved that goal but the lockdown continued and the goal post was moved on an almost-daily basis. Rush Limbaugh brilliantly asked, “Is this about ‘flattening the curve’ or about flattening the economy?” After nearly 3 months, 38 million unemployed and a projected 40% of businesses that will never reopen, we know the answer to that question. Some of us – this writer included – knew it after only a couple of weeks and even before Limbaugh posed the question.

As the weeks went by, Americans began to question the thinking behind what were and were not considered “essential businesses.” Why is it that sitting naked with your legs spread in stirrups to get an abortion at Planned Parenthood is perfectly safe while sitting fully clothed to get a trim at Joe’s Barber shop will kill you? Why is rubbing elbows with dozens at The Home Depot a few times a week good for you while sitting for one hour, one day a week in a church pew – wearing a mask and sitting 6 feet away from the next congregant – is deadly? I could cite hundreds of inconsistencies, but you get the point.

As totalitarian governors and mayors across the nation continued to pick winners and losers – as all socialist societies do – the one “loser” that more and more Americans could not wrap their brains around is our nation’s houses of worship.

Now, after three months and heading into the Memorial Day Weekend, critical mass had been reached and the American Protest has gone from sit-ins at lunch counters to kneel-downs in church pews. The very same leftists who once accused President Trump of insulting Gold Star Families have closed the churches those families’ fallen loved ones died to defend and have threatened to arrest anyone who defies them by trying to worship.

Did you ever think you’d live long-enough to see a day in America when going to church would be illegal, an act of protest or civil disobedience? I’ll answer that question in a moment, but first…..

As our nation has become more secular, we’ve watched the attacks on religion, particularly Christianity. We’ve seen God removed from nearly every aspect of our lives. We’ve seen the annual attacks on Christmas (until Donald Trump started smacking down the haters) as creches are removed and as “Merry Christmas” has been replaced by “Happy Holidays.” We’ve seen decades-old Christmas songs under attack and heard of countless lawsuits over the removal of the Ten Commandments and crosses that have stood for decades.

For eight years, we had a president (Obama) who mocked Christians as “people who cling to their guns, their god and their religion” and who, at a National Prayer Breakfast, lectured Christians thusly: “And lest we get on our high horse and think this (terrorism) is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.”

Barack HUSSEIN Obama drew a moral equivalence to radical Islamic terrorism and the responsive/defensive actions of Christians of a thousand years ago in order to lecture modern-day Christians. He neglected to mention that during the Crusades, the acts of Christians were in retaliation for and to defend themselves from the terrorism first wrought upon them at the hands of Muslim extremists. He also neglected to mention (and to apologize) that slavery and Jim Crow originated in his own party. At the time, we even heard loudmouths in the media and in entertainment – like Rosie O’Donnell – say things like “Radical Christianity is just as dangerous as radical Islam.”

“You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” – Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama’s first Chief of Staff

So, to answer the question I posed earlier, you’re damned right I knew I’d live to see it. I’ve seen it coming for a long time. The Coronavirus crisis exposed the socialist left and gave them an opportunity to do something they “could not do before,” something they’ve wanted to do for decades…..that is, shut down religion, shut down churches, shut down God. To the left, government IS their god, their omnipotent being and Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” is their bible.

We all heard New York Mayor Bill de Blasio threaten Hasidic Jews and send the NYPD to disperse an outdoor funeral procession for a deceased local rabbi. We also heard him threaten Christians about to celebrate Easter, their holiest day of the year.

Now, on the heels of President Trump calling for America’s governors and mayors to open their churches, we see what happened in Chicago, just yesterday, May 24th.

Courtney Lewis, the pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Chicago, was in the middle of his sermon when he heard loud banging on front doors. It was the police. Black, LGBTQ radical-activist-totalitarian Mayor Lori Lightfoot had sent to the church three squad cars and two unmarked cars filled with armed officers. She also sent a representative from her office.

Pastor Lewis said their goal was to shut down their Sunday services and described it as being “like the Soviet-style KGB.” The men of the church were earlier instructed not to open the doors during the services — per church protocol, “to protect members from the escalating gun violence in Chicago.” The pastor said, “The only thing she hasn’t done yet is beat the doors down and arrest our members.”

A church usher, who is typically positioned outside the building during the services, saw the police attempt to enter the building and began taking pictures. An individual in an unmarked car with tinted windows was even seen filming and photographing church members as they arrived, something that should shock every American – religious or not – to his core.

Reverend Lewis had earlier written a letter to U.S. Attorney John Lausch pleading for help and protection against Lightfoot and her gestapo. He said the church has taken great steps to follow CDC guidelines by having online services, outdoor services and engaging in social distancing. All church members must also have their temperatures taken before entering.

Pastor Lewis wrote: “We are trying to follow the laws of man as much as reasonably possible but when the laws of man conflict with the laws of God I as a pastor have a duty to follow the laws of God. We will not be intimidated by this overhanded government bully, but we are requesting the assistance of our president and our Justice Department in correcting this grave miscarriage of the law.” Rev. Lewis went on to say that Christian pastors are under attack in Chicago and they need help. “All we are seeking is the same consideration and trust that is being tendered toward the liquor stores, abortion clinics and Walmart.”

If Mayor Lightfoot was attempting to shoot herself in the foot yesterday, then she is left with nothing but a stump. There are two things you can say about the black community, in general. They are Christians who love their churches and they despise the radical, activist LGBTQ agenda.

For a black, LGBTQ woman to use her police to raid black churches, even as dozens of young, black men are blown away each week in her city is beyond any clear-thinking person’s comprehension.

If I were Joe Biden, I’d probably say to Mayor Lightfoot, “I tell you, if you have a problem figuring out whether to use your cops to protect the black men in your city from gun violence or to shut down black churches and arrest their members, then you ain’t black.”

The Democrat Party has now decided that the best way to win the black vote is to tell blacks they “ain’t black” unless they vote Democrat and to raid their churches and arrest them. This is precisely the kind of stuff that brought four black students to a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina on Feb. 1, 1960 in protest for their civil rights. The same Democrat Party that enslaved blacks 60 years ago, continues to do so to this day. Yet, blacks continue to support them in overwhelming numbers. Perhaps, just perhaps, the black community will now “see the light.” And perhaps, what they couldn’t accomplish 60 years ago by sitting, they can now do so by kneeling.

The same “experts” we were admonished to listen to when they told us we needed to shut it down are now saying it’s time to open it up. Those – including President Trump – disagreeing with or not heeding the expert’s advice throughout this crisis have been excoriated, their actions called “deadly” or “human experimentation.”

Yet, the same leftists, the same mayors and governors leveling those accusations just weeks ago are now, themselves, not listening to the advice of experts, including that of their leader, their god, if you will, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who said just this past Friday, May 22nd:

“Now is the time……to begin seriously looking at reopening the economy. I’m totally in favor of that, if done in the proper way in the appropriate setting. We can’t stay locked down for such a considerable period of time that you might do irreparable damage and have unintended consequences including consequences for health.”

Are Mayor Lightfoot’s actions “deadly” or “human experimentation”? Ditto those of Governors Whitmer, Cuomo, Wolf, Murphy and others? Why aren’t they listening to the experts and opening it up? The simple answer is because it doesn’t accomplish the left’s goal. The shutdown did. Fauci’s advice will continued to be ignored for as long as possible by those who have something other than public safety in mind. Eventually, the People themselves will open it up. And, if what we’ve seen around the country this weekend is a harbinger, it’ll be wide open sooner rather than later, totalitarians be damned.
