Thanks to acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Rick Grenell, an email that (then) Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice sent herself (15 minutes after Donald Trump took the Oath of Office) detailing the now infamous January 5, 2017 Oval Office meeting between herself, President Obama, Vice President Biden, FBI Director James Comey and acting Attorney General Sally Yates, among others, has now been fully declassified, revealing just how focused the outgoing Obama administration was on President Trump’s incoming National Security Advisor, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn.
The outgoing Obama told the incoming Trump that his two biggest problems would be North Korea and Flynn. Obama hated Flynn, largely due to his hawkish stance on Islamic terrorism, a phrase that Barack HUSSEIN Obama was allergic to.
The newly-unredacted portion of Rice’s email shows James Comey citing his concerns about Flynn’s conversations with Russian envoy Sergey Kislyak and Comey stating his reticence to share “sensitive information” related to Russia with General Flynn.
“Director Comey affirmed that he is processing ‘by the book’ as it relates to law enforcement. From a national security perspective, Comey said he does have some concerns that incoming NSA Flynn is speaking frequently with Russian ambassador Kislyak. Comey said that could be an issue as it relates to sharing sensitive information.”
Rice continues: “President Obama asked if Comey was saying that the NSC should not pass sensitive information related to Russia to Flynn. Comey replied ‘potentially.’ He added that he has no indication that Flynn has passed classified information to Kislyak, but he noted that ‘the level of communication is unusual.’”
Let me interrupt Ms. Rice’s email just to slap down James Comey. Truth be told, all incoming administration officials talk to their foreign counterparts. Let’s continue…..
In a section of the email to herself that had previously been declassified, Susan Rice wrote: “On January 5, following a briefing by IC [intelligence community] leadership on Russian hacking during the 2016 presidential election, President Obama had a brief follow-on conversation with FBI Director Jim Comey and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates in the Oval Office. Vice President Biden and I were also present.”
“President Obama began the conversation by stressing his continued commitment to ensuring that every aspect of this issue is handled by the intelligence and law enforcement communities ‘by the book.’ … The president stressed that he is not asking about, initiating, or instructing anything from a law enforcement perspective. He reiterated that our law enforcement team needs to proceed as it normally would by the book.”
A local public defender could destroy Susan Rice on the witness stand, particularly given her reputation of being able to lie with a straight face, as she did infamously on a half-dozen Sunday shows when she blamed the attacks of our Benghazi consulate – and the deaths of four Americans, including our ambassador – on a video that no one had ever seen until she started talking about it.
Questions that could be asked of Ms. Rice:
- How could President Obama claim to have a “continued commitment” to something he later said he knew nothing about until he found out about it in news reports, like the rest of us?
- How is it that – as we now know – then acting Attorney General Sally Yates was shocked to first learn of the surveillance of Michael Flynn from President Obama during that meeting if – as Obama claims – he found about it himself only later, through news reports, like the rest of us?
- Why would you write that things would be done “by the book?” Shouldn’t the American People be able assume that’s the way everything was done by the Obama Administration and by the FBI? Why did you feel the need to stress that it was “by the book” unless something being done by the administration might later – if discovered – leave the American People incredulous? Was this a CYA email?
- How is it that Joe Biden would claim to know nothing about the Flynn investigation if – as you’ve noted – he was present at that very January 5th, 2017 meeting during which the Flynn investigation was the topic of conversation?
Susan Rice’s now declassified email to herself and her account of what took place at that now infamous meeting doesn’t “jive” with an interview she gave to PBS anchor Judy Woodruff just three months later in April, 2017.
Woodruff led off the interview by asking Rice about possible surveillance of Donald Trump and those in his immediate orbit:
“In the last few hours, we’ve been following a disclosure by the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, that in essence, during the final days of the Obama administration, during the transition after President Trump had been elected, that he and the people around him may have been caught up in surveillance of foreign individuals and their identities may have been disclosed. Do you know anything about this?”
Ms. Rice responded:
“I know nothing about this. I was surprised to see reports from Chairman Nunes on that count today.”
Susan Rice, the same woman who repeatedly misled the country about the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack in Benghazi just did it again. The difference? When Rice lied about Benghazi, she was the UN Ambassador. When she lied to Judy Woodruff, she was former Obama national security advisor. As such, she could not be forced to testify, due to “executive privilege.”
After agreeing to tell the Benghazi lie on the Sunday shows in place of Hillary Clinton, Rice was rewarded by Obama with a cabinet position which would protect both of them. Hillary knew she’d later run for president and didn’t want to have the stench of another lie attached to her.
Now, as I write this blog, Susan Rice is now saying that she wrote her email to herself on the advice of White House Counsel. Another CYA lie? Time will tell. But, as we know, when it comes to Susan Rice, what’s past is prologue. This Rice will never be converted.
From our “Been there, done that” file:
As President Trump rightfully and correctly alleges a “Deep State Conspiracy,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham has announced he is scheduling a vote that would allow him to subpoena more than 50 current and former officials who were involved in the Justice Department’s investigation of Russian involvement in the 2016 campaign.
Among those on the list are former FBI Director James Comey, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan. The list also includes some current officials who are involved, including Attorney General William Barr and FBI Director Christopher Wray. The June vote will not be to subpoena those officials but to simply authorize Lindsey Graham to do so.
Lindsey Graham is famous for pounding the table, yelling and cussing on live television and of swearing to “get to the bottom of this” and to “hold people accountable.” He is equally famous for stopping there. As President Trump often says, “We’ll see what happens.”
