Over the weekend, former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama offered taped messages to the class of 2020. Not surprisingly, their comments were hardly uplifting, but rather, replete with negativity and Trump-trashing as the two men tried to rise above it all.
Bill Clinton told the graduates: “The world needs you. Your country needs you… Even before the outbreak, you knew you were entering a world of growing inequalities, and divisive tribalism, with people pulling away from those who are different from them. Seething resentments and a broken information system have empowered those who for profit and power for themselves, are willing to inflame our worst instincts. It’s put your future, our democracy, and our very planet at risk.”
He then offered some advice to graduates:
“With a tough but open mind and a caring heart, you can help keep us together. Help find ways to serve others, not run away from them. Help to unite, not to divide. Help to build, not tear down. Help to support, not demean. If you do, you will find your own path to fulfillment and happiness and in so doing, your example will inspire the world.” Bill Clinton talking about setting an example. Laughable and pathetic.
Bill Clinton – and Hillary, for that matter – talking about threats to our democracy? Really? When she thought she would win, Hillary – prematurely – accused Donald Trump of being unwilling to accept the results of the 2016 election, saying that “would be a threat to our democracy.” Yet, nearly four years later, Hillary still insists she won. So too does losing Georgia gubernatorial candidate and potential Biden VP pick, Stacey Abrams. But I digress.
As for Bill, he talks about serving others. Bill knows something about service, especially when he’s the one being serviced……in the Oval Office. He also knows something about lying about it on national television while pointing his finger at the American People. He’s also an expert at lying to Congress about it, then being impeached and disbarred for perjuring himself. Yes, Bill knows all about threats to our democracy. His decades of illicit behavior put him in the position of being blackmailed, putting our national security and our democracy – in his words – “at risk.”
Hillary Clinton herself, or through surrogates and “fixers,” like then staffer George Stephanopoulos, sought to cover up her husband’s peccadilloes and to destroy every one of the women………by so doing, obstructed justice. And we certainly don’t need to debate her private bathroom server, email deletion and Bleachbit scandal. The Clintons’ very existence has put our democracy “at risk.”
Not to be outdone, Barack Obama also took his cheap shots at President Trump.
“Doing what feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy, that’s how little kids think. Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grownups, including some with fancy titles, important jobs, still think that way, which is why things are so screwed up.”
Gee, that sounds like a shot at Bill Clinton
Obama continued: “More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing. A lot of them aren’t even pretending to be in charge.”
This, coming from theee most divisive, derisive president in my lifetime, a man who set race-relations back 60 years, a man who divided this nation by income, class, color, race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation and even legal status.
Obama talks about things being “so screwed up.” This is coming from a man who destroyed our healthcare system, our military, our standing in the world and who left us with a moribund economy with half the country on partial or total government assistance.
Obama talks about people who “aren’t even pretending to be in charge.” This, once again, from a man who – whenever something surfaced which made him look bad – claimed to learn about it “for the first time in news reports, just like everyone else.” This, from a man who spent his entire 8 years in office blaming George W. Bush for every one of his own failings and for every ill in our society. Conversely, he tried to take credit for the historic Trump economy, but quickly shut his mouth after the economy tanked due to the Coronavirus shutdown.
The comments from our former presidents were nothing short of the same hubris, hypocrisy, gaslighting and projection we’ve come to expect from them……and from Democrats and leftists, in general. It is beyond this writer’s comprehension how either of these two men can look in the mirror to shave in the morning, let alone offer advice to young people or to criticize President Trump – or anyone else, for that matter.
