“The American People are not morons. They understand what I’m about to say and at some point, we’re gonna have to trust ‘em. Number one: Very, very soon, the can’s gonna run outta road. We gotta open this economy. If we don’t, it’s gonna collapse. And if the US economy collapses, the world economy collapses. Trying to burn down the village to save it is foolish.”
Above, the folksy words of one of the few voices of reason throughout this pandemic, Louisiana Senator John Kennedy. In his parlance, he’s as right as rain.
Just 4 weeks ago, before the virus hit, Americans were prospering in an historic economy with a 3.5% unemployment rate not seen since Neil Armstrong first set foot on the Moon in 1969. Think about that.
On Tuesday (April 14), the Treasury Department was predicting a 10 percent unemployment rate once this week’s first-time filers numbers came out. Goldman Sachs is predicting a possible unemployment rate of 15% by midyear. A St. Louis Federal Reserve economist predicts a grim 32% unemployment rate – worse than that of the Great Depression.
As of this writing (April 17) twenty-two million Americans have lost their jobs over the past four weeks, due to the Coronavirus. Every job that was created since the Great Recession of the Obama era is gone and one can extrapolate from Thursday’s 22 million first-time filers figure that our unemployment rate is essentially 18 percent. Thirteen million jobs were lost during the Great Depression. We’ve lost 22 million in just the past four weeks.
If this shutdown continues, as many public health experts recommend it should, it doesn’t take a Rhodes Scholar to figure out that the economic impact on this country would kill more Americans than COVID-19. There are no masks nor gloves to protect you from poverty, the biggest killer known to mankind.
Any adult who can fog a mirror knows that a job loss causes extreme suffering. According to data from the National Bureau of Economic Research and the medical journal Lancet, every 1% hike in the unemployment rate will likely produce a 3.3% increase in drug overdose deaths and a 0.99% increase in suicides. If unemployment does hit the predicted 32% mark, as many as 77,000 Americans are likely to die from suicide and drug overdoses as a result. Scientists call them “deaths of despair.”
These numbers are based on experience, not flawed models, such as those that have seen “experts” like Coronavirus Taskforce Official Dr. Anthony Fauci predicting “millions” of cases of Coronavirus and up to 200,000 deaths by the time the pandemic ends……only to now revise his numbers to be “more like 60 thousand.”
Additionally, there are the predictable deaths from alcohol abuse caused by unemployment, even as liquor stores are deemed “essential” while churches are not. University of Miami Health Economist Michael French, a co-author of the study, found a “significant association between job loss” and binge drinking and alcoholism.
According to data in Social Science & Medicine, the impact of job losses goes beyond suicide, drug overdosing and drinking. Overall, the death rate for an unemployed person is 63% higher than for someone with a job, which means that deaths due to layoffs are likely to far exceed the 60,400 COVID-19 deaths predicted through August.
Recently, Speaker Nancy Pelosi admonished us to “ignore the lies” of President Trump and instead, “listen to the scientists and the respected professionals.” Surely, she means ALL scientists and respected professionals, including those who put together these data and not just those who share her views and who help further her agenda, right? This is the same woman who – along with her Democrat colleagues and media acolytes – dismiss scientists who do not share their climate change views as “racists” and “deniers.“
Americans are nearing the tipping point. We’ve had just about enough of this and President Trump can keenly sense that. He is anxious to get this economy reopened, with the necessary precautions, of course. The President cares about what happens and knows what’s coming if we don’t reopen this economy……and soon. But there are many with sinister, self-serving motives who insist we wait for an indeterminate period of time under the guise of public safety. As H. L. Mencken said, “The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule it.”
The Democrats are the Party of Grievance, the Party of Dependency. They promise to take care of us, so long as we vote for them. When the Democrats dole out “free money,” it’s never enough to allow you to thrive so that you can make it without their help. It’s merely enough for you to survive, so that you’ll keep voting Democrat in order to get that next check. Otherwise, why would you need them? That’s why the Democrats all agree on a $15 minimum wage. WHO came up with that arbitrary number?
If Democrats really wanted to help you to have a decent life, why not $50 per hour or $100? Why, indeed. If you were earning that much, eventually you’d become independent, self-sufficient and then you wouldn’t necessarily feel the need to vote Democrat. The $15 per hour minimum wage is called a “living wage” because that’s precisely all you’ll do…..live. But, you’ll still be GOVERNMENT DEPENDENT. You’ll have just enough food in your belly and gas in your car to make it to the polling station to vote (D) in the next election.
These days, we hear Democrats talking about “guaranteed incomes.” Failed presidential candidate Andrew Yang spoke of giving every American a “Freedom Dividend” of $1000 per month. In her “Green New Deal,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would provide a “guaranteed income” to those who “cannot or WILL NOT work.” Our parents and grandparents would be incredulous and are spinning in their graves.
The first $1,200 CARES ACT checks are just now starting to show up in checking accounts and mailboxes around the country, yet the Democrats are already pushing for a new bill, named “The Emergency Money for the People Act.” Clever name. They put about as much thought into that as George Costanza did with his fictitious “Human Fund: Money for People” charity. This new act would see every American age 16 and older making less than $130,000 annually receive at least $2,000 per month. With their new bill, in addition to buying off the older “takers” in our society, the Democrats are also making sure to bribe all of the teenagers and college age kids – who earn basically squat. They need to get them addicted to (dependent on) the free “government heroin” as young as possible. After all, they’re potential Democrat voters, too clueless to understand that this “free money” comes with strings attached, securely fastened at the other end to a big lever with a (D) on it. Quid pro quo much?
I’ve stated this so many times in previous blogs. The Democrats need dependency to survive as a Party. The longer they can keep the economy shut down – under the guise of public safety – the more businesses that will never reopen, the more jobs that will never come back and the more people who will then turn to the government – the Democrats – to take care of them…..the more government dependency.
Buy extending the shutdown, the Democrats can ensure that more and more Americans “lose their mojo,” their skills, as they get more and more Americans used to not working and – through their subsidies – get them used to living off the government, incentivizing them to NOT work. In addition to their unemployment checks, many will also receive an additional $600 per week…….as well as the $1,200 CARES ACT “stimulus check” currently “in the mail” and still another in May. Many will earn more by not working and many – society’s “takers” – will be just fine with that. The Democrats know this. It’s what they’re hoping for. Dependency, the oxygen, the lifeblood of the Democrat Party.
Think I’m talking nonsense? Human nature will never change. Read the words of Benjamin Franklin from 250 years ago:
“I am for doing good to the poor, but…I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed…that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.”
Believe it or not, many in this country are content to live in poverty, in government dependency. A person living in poverty in the US has a higher standard of living than most people in the world. That is a fact. If you can have all of the luxuries and accoutrements you desire at the taxpayers’ expense and don’t have to go to work, all the better. Far too many choose that route. That is also a fact.
In the United States, you can own a home, a car, a fully-stocked refrigerator, a big-screen television, central air conditioning a smart phone and more and still, technically, be living below the poverty level. I know this firsthand. Some years ago, after having had the rug pulled out from under me, I found myself forced to take a menial, low-wage job, just to keep myself fed and sheltered. It was a struggle, but I got through it and never took a dime from the government. I feel as though I took the road less traveled. For too many, the temptation to take the well-worn path is simply too strong and the Democrats know it. It’s what they count on to survive as a Party. That’s why they are constantly “dangling the carrot” and proposing more and more Nanny State programs. The Democrats will create – or take advantage of – a crisis, then push for a new, permanent, government handout to solve the very crisis they created.
“The Democrats create subsidy to create dependency to create constituency.” – Dr. Charles Krauthammer
During the Great Recession of the Obama years, many who were unable to find work after a long period of time decided to apply for permanent disability, citing depression, whether it was actually debilitating or not. It actually became a cottage industry and the numbers of those claiming depression was unlike anything we’d ever seen before. As this writer knows all-too-well, people do get depressed when they’ve been out of work a long time. Some keep hammering away until they find something, anything, to keep themselves fed, dressed and sheltered. However, many eventually give up looking for work altogether, choosing instead to hop aboard the government gravy train. Democrats LOVE depressed, desperate, unemployed people. So much so that they try to create more of them because they view each as a potential Democrat voter. That’s why they delayed passage of the CARES ACT for as long as they could, making sure it took as long as possible for Americans to get their checks so that their pain and despair would be deeper and longer. It is also why they’re now delaying aid to small businesses. They want to ensure as many as possible become insolvent and are forced to close forever and that their employees’ jobs never come back. Those small business owners – as well as their former employees – will then be forced to turn to the government for help. More subsidy. More dependency, more constituency.
”We must revise or replace programs enacted in the name of compassion that degrade the moral worth of work, encourage family breakups and drive entire communities into a bleak and heartless dependency.” – Ronald Reagan
It is no secret that the Democrat Party has been hijacked by socialists and that a growing number of Americans, particularly Millennials, think it’s the best thing since sliced Starbucks croissants. Those who truly understand socialism know that since the economy was shut down, since restrictions were put on our every move and since store shelves went bare, we’ve been living it. Many – if not most or all – on the left would like to see this as the permanent, new normal, what President Barack HUSSEIN Obama called “the fundamental transformation of the United States of America.” It’s something he worked very hard to achieve and something that Donald Trump has all but obliterated through his economic policies which resulted in millions of self-sufficient, self-sustaining, independent Americans no longer needing the government’s help…..and no longer needing the Democrats. Donald Trump made the Democrats, their policies, their subsidies, their “heroin,” unneeded, superfluous. That’s why they hate him. That’s why he – and the people who voted for him – must be destroyed…..at any and all costs.
1960s radical professors Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven (later married) developed their “Cloward-Piven Strategy” of “collapsing the system” in order to then usher in a “new system.” In this case, Socialism. They were acolytes of radical progressive community organizer, Saul Alinsky, who believed in the theory of “through crisis comes change” and opined that in order to bring about that change, one must create crisis or social instability where there is none. Today’s Democrats – you know the main cast of characters – are not going to “let a serious crisis go to waste.” They believe they have a real shot at finishing the work that Barack Obama started, a real chance at making this socialism trial run permanent.
Americans have been willing to live under a temporary socialism due to COVID-19, because we have relied on the experts, thinking they have our best interests at heart. The actions and inaction of the World Health Organization as well as those of the Democrats and some of our own “experts” have us asking a lot of questions. This writer needs no convincing to prove to him that the Democrat Party is doing everything it can to dodge, deceive, deflect, obfuscate and gaslight us into the socialist utopia they’ve dreamed of since the Woodrow Wilson Administration more than a hundred years ago. To that end, they will create as much pain, suffering, depression, joblessness and economic hardship as possible in order to get rid of Donald Trump and to wrest back power from the Republicans as well as the American People.
President Trump, flanked by Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx, revealed the White House “Opening Up American Again” guidelines allowing for states to reopen in phases, based on having met certain criteria. In Phase 1, states will need to demonstrate a downward trend in COVID-19 cases over a 14-day period and a “robust” system for testing health care workers before they can proceed to their phased openings of restaurants, bars, theaters, workplaces, sporting centers and gyms as soon as May 1. Phase 1 recommends continued social distancing, closure of schools, teleworking and sheltering in place for vulnerable individuals.
During an earlier conference call, Mr. Trump told governors that the guidelines were a recommendation:
“Bottom line, if you’re ready and you have those beautiful, low numbers like some of you have, let’s get going, let’s open up your state,” The President then praised governors for their hard work, saying “you’re gonna call your shots.”
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and the other Northeast Governors will keep their states shutdown until at least May 15, 2020. They agreed that shelter-in-place shall remain in effect.
New Jersey Governor Murphy stated:
“It’s a very delicate balance. I interview business owners and other decision-makers all of the time. Business owners who rely on the summer business to enable them to survive the off season and shoulder months cannot afford to lose the entire summer.”
“The Opening Up America Guidelines” were explained in detail yesterday by Drs. Fauci and Birx during the President’s daily Coronavirus Press Conference. They worked with President Trump and other members of the Coronavirus Taskforce in preparing these guidelines. These are the very people whom Speaker Nancy Pelosi – just days ago – urged us to listen to, “the scientists and respected professionals” as she called them.
Yet, no sooner had the guidelines been shared with the American People, when Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, Joe Biden and others began engaging in political partisanship, mockery and demagoguery. To wit:
“The White House’s vague and inconsistent document does nothing to make up for the President’s failure to listen to the scientists and produce and distribute national rapid testing. The President’s continued insistence on moving forward without testing, contact tracing, demographic data collection and a respect for science and the facts risks further death and economic disaster.” – Nancy Pelosi
“If Trump ignores the experts and forces a premature reopening, even more Americans will die.” – Adam Schiff
Joe Biden called the plan “generic,” saying, “Well, I wouldn’t call it a plan. I think what he’s done, he’s kind of punted.”
As I said in my previous blog, everyone is an expert, everyone is a critic.
Over the past two days, we have learned that it is all but certain that COVID-19 was created in a lab in Wuhan, China and that it got out because of sloppy handling by the technicians. Three of the young doctors who tried to blow the whistle to warn the world are either dead, missing or have been silenced at the hands of the Communist Chinese government. After confirming the first cases in Wuhan, air travel from Wuhan to other parts of China was curtailed to prevent the spread throughout the country, while air travel from Wuhan to other parts of the world, including Italy and the United States, was not. That, too, was at the hands of the Communist Chinese government. Information about the virus was kept secret from the rest of the world, including the United States, resulting in the worldwide spread, more than 2 million cases and more than 150 thousand deaths, 25,000 in the United States alone. All of that was at the hands of the Communist Chinese government.
“The goal of socialism is communism.” – Vladimir Lenin
For very specific, obvious reasons, we’re all living under temporary socialism right now. It’s a necessary evil for the time being. Having said that, it has gotten very much out of control in some states, Michigan being the most-glaring example. Democrats “never let a serious crisis go to waste.” They want to make this temporary socialism permanent – the new normal – and they’re seizing this opportunity, purposely trying to drag it out, to that end. The eventual result will be the very communism that created this pandemic…..which has me sitting at my computer, writing this blog post, when I should be out there working, earning my own keep, an exponentially far better option than depending on checks from Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.
