Americans are spending an inordinate amount of time watching television of late and I think we can all agree the constant barrage of Covid-19-themed commercials long ago achieved critical mass. In an earlier blog, I did speak to the latest iteration of pablum coming from Madison Avenue.
Old platitudes and trite, hackneyed phrases like “We’re in this together” and “We’re here for you” come at us like buckshot. We change the channel to no avail.
One phrase frequently begins each spot, the sincere-sounding voice speaking over the pastoral piano music. “In this time of uncertainty…….”
In this time of uncertainty, one thing is for certain. The daily briefings, updates and press conferences have thrust a number of normally “not ready for prime-time players” into the national spotlight and some of them are making the most of their “fifteen minutes.” Chief among them are New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Coronavirus Task Force members Drs. Deborah Birx and Anthony Fauci. Andy Warhol called.
It is news to no one that Governor Cuomo has higher aspirations and he is using his newfound national celebrity as an audition for the 2024 Democrat presidential nomination. His omnipresence will soon see him eclipsing Regis Philbin’s Guinness World Record of “the most hours on camera” with Senator Chuck Schumer coming in at a close second.
Some have suggested that Joe Biden will choose Cuomo as his running mate or that he will ride to the rescue to become the 2020 Democrat nominee once Biden inevitably implodes. As for the former, Cuomo does not check off the woke/diversity boxes. He’s just another old, white guy and Biden has stated repeatedly that he’ll choose a woman. As far as the latter is concerned, for the Governor to abandon his state at this time would see him on a political ventilator facing his ultimate demise. If such a move didn’t destroy him, the Trump campaign’s constant airing of Cuomo’s “America was never that great” comment would surely find him on the political ash heap of history. No. Andrew Cuomo has his sights set on 2024.
President Trump’s approval rating is at an all-time high at 49 percent, higher than Barack Obama at this time in his presidency, despite Obama getting fawning, gushing press while Trump receives 93% negative press 24/7. Andrew Cuomo doesn’t have a chance. Neither does Joe Biden. No serious person can see Biden as being intellectually or physical equipped to guide us through these seemingly non-navigable waters when he mixes up his own wife and sister and when he doesn’t even know what state he’s in. Whether they like him or not, the American People are looking to President Trump right now. He is seen as the leader, the man at the wheel and that is a powerful image. As is always the case, the American People will be reluctant to make a change while we’re at war…….and make no mistake, we ARE at war, and Covid-19 is not the only enemy facing this country.
Dr. Deborah Birx’s penchant for colorful scarves has seen fan clubs surface across the country. Her collection of neck wraps dwarfs Carrie Bradshaw’s (or Imelda Marcos’ for those old-enough to remember) collection of Manolo Blahniks and throughout the past weeks, we’ve watched the wardrobe evolution. I fully expect to one day see credits roll at the end of the daily briefings and see “Ms. Birx’s wardrobe by Bob Mackie.”
On a daily basis, we have been treated to the veritable kaleidoscope of colors and hues that were once tightly wrapped around her neck, but which now more frequently are positioned to expose some skin. Birx has become the Norma Desmond of the Task Force, despite some of her statements which leave me shaking my head – and wondering.
Among other things, her numbers are all over the place as “the models continue to evolve.” Several days ago, she told us that people who die WITH Covid-19 but NOT FROM Covid-19 are still counted as having died from the virus. Why? She also intimated that the handshake may go the way of the Edsel. Why? These types of deflating comments are in contrast to those of the President, who is trying to give the American People hope during a time when many are feeling hopeless. Birx should contain her comments to medicine.
Finally, Dr. Anthony Fauci. While I do not question his knowledge nor skills, I do sometimes question his motivations. The bespectacled, diminutive doctor seems to lately be puttin’ on the ritz where his suits are concerned and now frequently, ostensibly eschews the glasses. Little nerdy guy finally getting noticed at 79.
Fauci is adored by the Left and the left-wing media and that alone makes me suspect. Remember, this learned man told us on January 21st that “America has nothing to worry about.” He later “evolved” and started espousing doom and gloom scenarios. Now, he’s “evolved” again and tells us that the 200 thousand death toll he was predicting “is now more like sixty thousand.” Even epidemiologist Neil Ferguson – who originally predicted 2.2 million would die in the U.S. – has now dramatically reduced his estimates.
Some of the so-called “models” being used to predict these numbers were/are useless because they were/are based on how the virus would spread and the death toll were the United States government to do NOTHING. We know that the government was NEVER NOT going to do something, so why use these numbers….just to scare everyone and to crash the economy? He has also stated that “America may never return to normal.” Again, why say something like that and why right now? Why would he not display the same enthusiasm for Hydroxychloroquine as does the President when it has helped so many? Why indeed.
Dr. Fauci is as much a part of the Washington Swamp as Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer or Adam Schiff. He was appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1984 and has served under six presidents. He’s also a big fan (some say friend) of Hillary Clinton. In January of 2016, as the presidential campaign was beginning, Fauci fired off a letter addressed to Mrs. Clinton “from your doctor admirer.”
Anthony Fauci frequently contradicts himself and even contradicts or criticizes President Trump on CNN and other left-wing media outlets, saying one thing while in front of the President during the daily briefings, then appearing soon after on CNN and elsewhere to criticize him.
Over the past three and a half years, we’ve seen time and again that – in many cases – President Trump is surrounded by a “pack of evildoers” determined to destroy him. A number of leaks, lies and false testimony have come from some Obama holdovers and others who see President Trump (and any president, for that matter) as a mere interloper, a temporary White House guest, while they were members of the Swamp long before Trump got there and will be there long after he’s gone.
Is it a stretch to think it possible that even some of these so-called “experts” whose advice many insist Donald Trump follow blindly….might have their own agendas? Would it be cynical to think that among those agendas would be the collapse of the stock market and the implosion of the economy in order to destroy President Trump’s chances of reelection? Do you think that Bill Maher is the only person who believes it would be worth destroying the economy to get rid of Trump? Are you so naïve to believe that there aren’t those among us who believe it would be worth it for Americans to die so long as President Trump were out of the White House next January?
Is it possible that Bernie Sanders is not the only socialist in Washington DC (please) and that there are others whose goal is to see this country living under a permanent state of socialism not unlike what every American is essentially experiencing right now, during this crisis? Can Joe Biden possibly be the only China defender/apologist in Washington, DC?
A lot of mistakes and a lot of bad calls have been made by the so-called experts, causing a lot of panic and despair as well as long-term damage to our economy. Meanwhile, President Trump, a lay person, made the right call and shut down travel both from China and Europe, saving untold numbers of Americans. The President is caught between a rock and a hard place. If he follows the advice of the experts – as he is ostensibly being forced to do – and their advice turns out to be wrong, HE is the one who gets blamed. If he ignores their advice, follows his own gut and turns out to be right, he is still excoriated by the media for not following the experts’ advice, even though it turns out that he made the right call. President Trump is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.
A ship can have only one captain. Donald Trump is that captain. He is navigating us through uncharted waters that even the so-called experts are unfamiliar with, as they have frequently shown us. Is it too much to ask that those who tell us “we’re in this together” give President Trump a wider berth while fawning over the Andrew Cuomos, Deborah Birxes and Anthony Faucis as they get ready for their close-ups?
